Red thread vessel made with iris leaves made by Fay Abromwich.

This body of work, these specifically chosen individual woven vessels, are handmade from the dried leaves of plants found in my Kew garden.
The creation of my garden, with plants and trees either gifted by friends and family, or chosen for their ability to feed, nurture, and to bring colour and form to my immediate surrounds has been many decades in the making.
The making of baskets (vessels) allows me, at the end of their green cycle, to harvest leaves from their surrounds instead of taking a natural path of breaking down into mulch (or going in the green bin). The leaves of the Iris or Cordyline, and thread made from natural materials, are transformed in a process which for me, becomes a meditation, into unique shapes. During this process, the vessel ‘tells’ me when to adjust my work and create the forms you see here.
My first memory of basket making was in Year 10 at school. I remember enjoying it immensely. A similar feeling was experienced in my studies of the Craft Teacher Training Course at the Sophia Mundi Steiner School in 2007 when the subject of basket making was explored.
